There is no place like home
If you grew up when sitcoms were about huge families with ordinary problems, of course you saw Full House. And if you didn't, at least you saw the opening. It had very nice San Francisco vintage views. There's a shot where some characters lay at a nice park with iconic colorful houses in the background, which are the famous so-called Painted Ladies. These are Victorian buildings that were repainted in the sixties with vivid colors and white reliefs. They are always associated with the Bay Area, but there are thousands of them in the USA.
But if what I had just said doesn't make any sense and Full House is for you a Balatro poker hand, maybe I should just get to the point.
Our house in the middle of our street
Cities have different types of housing and inside the game, we decided to make high and low-density buildings.
The high-density buildings have a land area of 400 square meters and can accommodate up to 60 people in total. They have different floors and independent units for families.
Low-density buildings can accommodate up to 10 people, but they are only one unit on 400 square meters of land.
These Painted Ladies look very contrasted in comparison to the other colors, but they are of the same palette as the rest of the game! So the selection was made on purpose, to highlight them next to the other buildings.
Another member of the high-density housing is these bluish apartments. They have the same body but different roofs and window layouts.
These were born as a variation of the first high-density building, but they ended up having their own personality. In the game, these are called "town house block".
For low-density buildings, we have classic houses. There are four variations. Image description: If you have too many of them together that are yellow, they will look like the Dharma Village.
Now what can you do with this information?
If you want to master the real estate market, it's important to notice that if you want to have high or low-density areas with just one type of building, it's not 100% up to you, but to destiny. When you build town blocks, or houses, you can only select the category, but not the building itself. But there's a favorable chance that the building you place next to another will end up being the same that was already placed.
The housing market
Capacity doesn't mean that as soon as you place a building, tenants will spawn there. It means that families of any size will be able to move there if they can pay the rent!
That's because the housing market is simulated, interacting with other variables inside the game. These variables can be if citizens have a job, if buildings of any kind still have capacity or are full, the price of the rent, or if they're retired or not. If they can't pay the rent, they will eventually be homeless. The public system will try to help relocate them to a place, but that will only be possible if citizens can afford the rent and can assume the costs of living.
Take all these things into consideration when building your city!
